This pamphlet provides guidelines, recommended practices and other useful information for the safe handling of and emergency response to anhydrous hydrogen chloride (AHCl), refrigerated liquid (UN 2186), in rail tank cars and highway cargo tanks. It represents a compendium of Institute membership experience as of the date of publication. This pamphlet does not address guidance for “non-refrigerated liquid” AHCl (UN 1050), which is transported in cylinders and tube trailers. Instead, you can find guidance for AHCl, non-refrigerated liquid (UN 1050), in CI Pamphlet 99 (11.1).
It is also important to note that this pamphlet only addresses “anhydrous” hydrogen chloride, and it does not address “aqueous” hydrogen chloride (also known as hydrochloric acid or muriatic acid (UN 1789)). While they may have similar names, these two materials have different physical and chemical properties and, therefore, require different considerations for safe handling and emergency response. Guidance on the transportation of hydrochloric acid can be found in CI Pamphlets 98 and 150 (11.1).
